InDesign Deconstructed Layouts

I took this layout from i-D magazine. What I liked about it was the very obvious and basic structural nature of the layout. Despite the pictures not being perfectly aligned (think this was more to do with my poor scanning capabilities rather than the layout itself) it's an obvious layout to demonstrate a basic four section layout. The text and the images are all roughly the same size and all feature footer text underneath. From a structured design point of view, this works as a layout, however I personally would like something a little less uniform.

This is also another layout from i-D magazine and it's easy to see their style of layouts when comparing the two to eachother. They have both gone with matching text to images and keeping the whole thing very structured. There's no other features other than the title, image and then text and throughout the magazine, it doesn't often sway from that type of design. Three columns make up the text which balances well with the images (of which there are six, two for each column of text, pretty much). Despite the three columns of main text however, the header or introduction text is only one solid column, that runs the width of the entire page. I personally don't like the look of this, but it does keep in keeping with a grid system, so technically it works.

I took this layout from NOTION magazine, one of my favourite magazines for their design at the moment. This is definitely my favourite layout of the three and what makes it work for me is that there's enough going on in the layout for it to be interesting, without it being cluttered. The text they use throughout the magazine as a copy text is Courier Neue which works as a clean and minimalist type to add to the feel of the design of the layouts. What I like about this layout is that it works in two ways, there's the main body of image and text, but also a sidebar on the left hand side that also works within its own grid. I think this difference makes the layout stand out amongst the other two and makes it the more interesting out of the three layouts. I take a lot of inspiration from NOTION magazine for layout ideas as well as creative design inspiration.
