Thumbnails

1.
2.
These are the two sets of thumbnails I drew for the postcard project.

1. At the beginning of this project, I wanted to play around with the idea of illustrating my own postcard, from scratch. I researched artists such as Gemma Correll, Keri Smith and Andy J Miller to inspire me to start drawing and creating. The thumbnails were rough guides to remind me of placements and ideas on what to draw for different words as well as different angles such as horizontal or vertical placements.

2. However as the project went on, it hit me one day whilst reading the book American Psycho that Patrick Bateman, the protangist of the book. American Psycho is about a 27 year old businessman, based in the 80's, in full swing of yuppie culture, and how this said yuppie is a serial killer. Killing off prostitutes and various business rivals, he takes great pleasure in murder. (I apologise if you haven't read the book or seen the film, I do have to spoil it for a valid evaluation!) As the end of the book/film nears, you realise that throughout the story he's not been killing anyone, rather it's been all in his head. This made me think about how to use this great iconic character as a basis for my postcard designs. I began to play with the idea of illness as the main word, playing with the idea of how his mental illness caused him to think that he was committing all the horrible acts you read/view. Above are the rough sketches I came up with as I began designing and planning my more in depth postcard design.
