Firstly, I think the image works really well as the centre piece of the design, it keeps the postcard balanced and allows for a great focus point to the design. I also think that the image itself is something that you are drawn to, due to it's nature of anger, distress, mental illness and fear. It's probably one of the most famous images that came from the movie and it really works as a selling point for the film's plot and great acting by Christian Bale.
Another reason I think this works is the way the text works at a great focus point in the postcard. The colour works with the rest of the image, picking up on the small amount of blood splatter that is seen on Patrick Bateman's face, and the colour also works on it's own since the colour is the same as that of blood, a small indication and representation of the kind of man he is. Having the strip of text over his eyes is another way that I can attach his mental illness to his personality and persona. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and this works well as a description of this piece.
Finally, I think the word 'illness' works with this design. The image of Patrick Bateman is quite reminscent of that of Edvard Munch's The Scream which is famously depicting an enterpretation of many different mental illnesses that many people suffer with. Along with this connection, I think it makes the word 'illness' stand out and carries it's meaning across to the viewer better than I could have imagined.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the result of this stage of the project, and I'm really pleased I've been able to combine my love of one of my favourite novels and films into my work.
(To create this image I used both Illustrator and Photoshop. Illustrator to vectorize the image and make it a little bolder by live tracing and live painting, and then following on in Photoshop to arrange the image and the text together along with the blur on the image of Patrick Bateman.)
